Hey guys well i went down to a local engineering place today to inquire about getting the plastic cogs in our drivers and passenger seats made out of steel. After a quick chat to the guy he worked out about a rough price of around $65 if i had 50 made.

Now I'm just putting this thread to see if there is any interest in making this happen. A once of for this is around $300 so this really is a chance for alot of people to save some money and stop the annoying plastic cogs getting stripped.

i'd be interested, provided the cost doesn't go up and it's confirmed to work
any way you can test one before having a mass purchase?

This is where it's going to get a little difficult i guess. The guys said its going to cost around about $300 if i just ordered one to test etc. While i would be willing to front the cash for this i would almost have to put another $5 or so on the price if they work to cover the cost out of my pocket.

agreed, this makes it a bit more difficult. $5 more each is not too bad, but you'll need a solid list of people interested before you commit.
put me down for one.

i believe the other cog in the seat rail is metal. This is the only plastic bit inside the entire unit i believe

The reason they don't use two metal gears is that the nylon one is sacrifical! some parts needs to wear.
If you do run two steel gears you may find you will wear both of damage another part of the seat rail. motor for example.
How long do the gears last?
These cars are old and I bet the seats have been back and forward a thounsand times.
You may find when you replace the nylon gear with a new nylon one it will last another 10 to 15 years?
I replace and use quite a lot of gears were I work and we always have a sacrifical gear some are nylon and some steel and they run agaist a hardened gear
Just my 2 cents worth just don't want you to out lay money that may or may not be a good return.

Second already? Mine have never even been replaced and its a 91 (touch wood)

Would be worth seeing if anyone else with those new cogs have worn them out that quick

this Rant

as insurance ill prob buy another spare set in a bit just to keep but i agree with what angila has said about gears and honesly its not like i move the seat every day. i actually have moved it about an inch since getting the new cogs in so dont think i have to worry.

however if someone can test metal cogs and safely say they wont fuck up then i may get them as the spare set as 70 is not a bad price.

what i really think really needs to be done is someone with a aftermarket seat rail (i know some guy in brizzy got a good deal on some an year to two ago Sad ) needs to see if he can get coppies made and sell em. ill be up for that for sure Very Happy

You have to remember with the plastic cogs that you can not move the seat rail manually with the motor still attached - If you do this then its a sure fire way to strip the cog once again..

It might be an idea to look at getting the gears made out of bronze. Bronze is used for bearing bushes in some applications as it has lubricating properties.

Being a soft metal it will still wear but not at a rate the nylon one would

Might be worth looking into
