What changed at what year exactly?

Eg: when did the passenger airbag become available?
When did the front indicators turn clear?
When did the rear lights start getting a chrome surround?
When did the rear bumper get fatter?

What other interesting facts are out there?
Aaron's cruise control stalk has all Japanese written on it, but mine is in English?!?

The Aristo has no thermo fan, most cars with mechanical fans still have a thermo they run with the AC to ensure good flow over the heat exchanger when the car is not moving. I also note the Aristo has a fluid type drive system for the fan, I'm told this is an Aristo 2J only item - I wonder why Toyota thought it needed to be different?

Why wait to bring the second turbo in at 4 grand? Surely the TT system could produce the maximum standard boost at, say 3 grand?

What is standard boost level? Are the wheels ceramic in these? What is a max safe boost level? With a cooler?

I'm an inquisitive little bugger - help a brother out Smile

Hmm I can answer some,
I know the Aristo fan system is hydralic. Standard boost is 9-10 psi? People run 18PSI on there stock twins with no problems. Yes they are ceramic wheeled.

Thats about it >_>

I believe that early 1994 is a good estimate of the answer to your queries (just an estimate though)

Mine is 94, one airbag, fat bumper & clear lights, but my car has been resprayed, so parts could have likely been changed at that time.

The Aristo has no thermo fan.
I also note the Aristo has a fluid type drive system for the fan, I'm told this is an Aristo 2J only item - I wonder why Toyota thought it needed to be different?

The fan system is actually the same system as found in the 1JZ supra and chaser. An easy conversion is to remove the pump and replace with a normal Supra TT water pump and fit thermos or find a supra/soarer shroud and fan

What is standard boost level? Are the wheels ceramic in these?
stock boost is around 7psi up to 9psi. Add a good flowing exhaust and/or intercooler and it will rise to around 12psi. The turbo's are ceramic, same as the JZA80 (jap spec) supra. Should be able to swap with US spec supra turbo's easily.

What is a max safe boost level?
people are running up to 17psi with no issues on jap spec supra's. (Boost cut removed) and some form of air/fuel management is a good idea. (SAFC)

Hope that helps Smile

Ben

Good work Ben. Why are people ditching the hydraulic fan setup in favour of normal clutch setup? Or only do that if your hydraulic system starts to play up?

Actually no its the water pump that fails. As the water pump has the hydrolic pump attached to the front of it. When your water pump goes, you'll need to replace the whole unit, which costs around $1200 new :!:

The easiest and cheapest thing to do is replace it with a normal supra/soarer water pump with clutch fan and remove all the hydro pump/fan setup, thus saving weight and eliminating the expensive replacement every 100,000km's

Cheers
Ben

Aaron will probably end up bringing in a few half cuts so Aristo unique parts wont be too hard to track down.

16100-49846 Waterpump, $114 from castlehill toyota, or penrith toyota Smile

You'll also need,

96761-24023 O-RING for water bypass X2, around $4 each from memory
90916-03093 Thermostat, $14.85c
16325-62010 Thermostat Seal, around $12 from memory

You will also need a new waterpump pulley as the aristo pulley wont fit the supra pump. A new pulley should be easy to find at the wreckers, 2J supra, 1J chaser and 1J soarer's have the same pulley, (non-vvti).

Then you'll need a thermo switch for turning the thermos on (if you use electric thermo's. (around $50)

Cheers
Ben

Not picking at your post mate (we’re all still learning) but here is some more info about the stocker turbo’s.

US Spec is CT12B, JAP spec is CT20.

Contrary to popular belief the JAP CT20 is actually a larger turbo (with larger shaft)…. Even though US is steel wheel’d it would be a downgrade from a JAP spec turbo…. Jap flow more air.

Also the larger shaft is why boosted JAP spec (CT20) 2JZGTE's don’t snap compressors off like US 2JZGTE (CT12B) from transition from single to twin turbo.

I’ve heard of up to 20psi on stock ceramic twins, they seem to be a really robust turbo….. a mate has been running 17psi (with FCD) for about 4 years with no issues at all. That said boost at your own risk!.

I've seen so many of all the years with amber indicators, I'm wondering if there is an amber reflective bit in there, that people remove, and just swap the clear bulb for an amber one?

....back on the Turbo specs, there are a lot of places claiming that the Jap spec turbos are CT12B's even HPI have got it wrong?

It's only when I googled it a bit more I found some places claiming that Jap Spec 2JZGTE's are CT20's.

How is there so much confusion, should be straight forward I thought.

So which is correct?

Could be onto something there.

Any idea how much a set of new headlights are? Im half keen to spend the money for some, but not a rediculous amount (which they probably are). I want them clear, not this old faded look.
