Hey guys

air filters...

pods vs aftermarket panel filter vs stock

What do you all think?

Can anyone here say that a aftermarket (e.g K&N or TRD) filter has improved performance of there aristo?

Pod, ONLY if you put it in an enclosed heat sheilded box with cold induction, otherwise a good quality TRD or K&N filter to replace your standard.

This car i will just put in an aftermarket panel filter. Not going down the pod filter path ... subtle mods which the cops won't look twice at.

I've just gone through the whole painful exercise on tracking down and purchasing a stock airbox & duct (as the compliancer stole mine... it came from japan with the stock unit fitted, pricks)..... only cost me $15+ shipping though.

Did some sums and the Aristo K&N filter is approx 10% larger in surface area than the 2JZGTE JZA80 k&N filter and the general consensus on the US supra forums is that the stock JZA80 airbox will never need to be replaced with stock twins (& higher flowing panel insert).

I will be re-fitting mine with a K&N panel & duct from the bottom of the box to the front bar (as well as stock over the radiator duct) for maximum cold air.... Cant wait to get rid of my shitty HKS mushroom 'filter' (of which the standard filter has more surface area anyway).

FYI the stock airfilter part number from Toyota is 1780150020 (double check though if ordering) & K&N part number is 33-2053 (again, double check).

I went TRD. Still quite expensive; around $130- bucks from memory. I don't think you can really beat the stock setup having the airbox and all. It seems an almost pointless exercise to me in a street car. To each his own. I remember on the Como's and Falcons, the cheapest performance enhancment was to increast the airbox opening. Even today, the XR6 has a bigger opening that the entry level. Look at the Aristo and it is done as perfect as you are going to get it I think.

Hehehe. After saying all that I probably only bought the TRD one cos it is TRD! It kills the crappy aftermarket one that was in there and I guess a genuine one would not be too much different to the TRD one. The aftermarket one that got installed at complience was a joke! It didn't even sit tight in the mounts.

I would go Toyota filter or if you are silly enough like me to spend alot more go the TRD.

Just my 2 cents.

BTW: If you ever need the standard airbox, don't forget the half-cuts coming into the country and look at buying from the person who bought the half cut off the importer and is getting rid of the stuff they don't need and not the importer as you can save heaps of money. $15- not bad though.

I tried my mates Apexi POD power intake and noticed the turbo spool and stock blow off valve was alot louder, made that fluttering noise at lower rpm's and has that HKS ssq bov noise at higher rpm's.

In terms of power, no difference, if that it felt a bit more laggy but maybe because i still have a stock exhaust.

I think ill go for this intake, but need to get an exhaust first.
