be careful with pwr ones, mate put one in his laurel drift car and went to high pressure clean it and it bent the fins, first time ive ever seen it with an alloy core. _________________
time for an update on my ASI radiator install progress, the rad fits no worries with the aid of a couple of simple brackets and i`ve bolted a 16" thermo to that but i was having a hard time sorting out what to do with the hydraulic fan pump, wether to just remove the vains from inside the pump, fill it with oil and just recirculate the lines back into the pump or remove it and replace it with a supra one. so while removing the valves and vains of the pump in my lunch break at work i got the skin on the edge of my finger caught in a spring of our bearing press. not happy.... had a temper tantrum and smashed the pump in three pieces with a near by mallet. so i guess i`m going the supra pump way now, ordered my pump and found out i need a different pulley for it too. toyota wanted $180 for a genuine one so i had to order a full set of alloy ones from ebay for $100. so thats where i`m at now, waiting for the pulleys to arrive. so far its turned out to be a little more costly than i first expected.
ps just bought some 20"x8.5" and 20"x10" for her last week... arrived today. 4" of dish yeah yeah

My radiator is on the way (freakin awesome!), so i'll be the 2nd aristo owner with a Race radiators unit installed.
My 16" thermo arrived today as well. Im mounting that in the centre of the original fan shroud (since ive already converted to supra pump and pulley) so im hoping it'll provide enough cooling for the hot qld weather. I'll throw smoe pics up when its complete, which will be friday night.

im still running the hydraulic fan with my race radiators alloy one.... the hydraulic fan is ideal for these engines, and some ppl would say that going to a thermo doesnt produce enough torque for it...
im also still running the standard auto cooler that they happily built into the bottom tank, aswell as the temp sensor...
using the hydro fan is VERY recommended. The only reason i went to thermo's is because my water pump died and i didnt want to spend $1100 on a new one.
Heres a couple of pics of my new 16" thermo mounted in the stock shroud. Not too bad for 1/2 hours work. I wish someone sold 18" thermo's as then it would fit nicely, but 16" will hopefully do for now.
I'll mount it on the new radiator tomorrow when it arrives

i hope your happy with the rad... im stoked with mine... with the toyota coolant, and a good clean out of what was between the condenser and old rad... the temp guage doesnt get above the 3rd dash on the temp guage... _________________
2 issues, it didnt come with the promised mounting brackets for the top and the top tank is slightly bent... weird.
Apart from that it passed feline inspection with flying colours.
Now ive gotta intall the sucker!

Got a problem
Just installed the new alloy radiator and thermo fan. The issue is that when i go for a drive, the temp gets up to 105degrees very quickly (the temp sensor is in the top radiator hose).
Which way does the water flow through the radiator? I assumed it went from the radiator top tank into the motor, through the engine, down through the thermostat and back into the bottom of the radiator. Is that right? Or is it the other way around?
I have felt the bottom tank and its stone cold but the top tank is excessively hot. My prime suspect is the thermostat, even though i just checked it and resinstalled it during my flush out with new coolant.
Im gunna rip it out and inspect anyway. In the meantime, any ideas of what else it could be?

When you checked the thermostat did you just do a visual inspection or did you drop it in boiling water and check that it opened?
What about running it without the thermostat in and seeing if the temp goes back to normal operating conditions, if so then you know it is the thermostat causing the restriction. _________________
I have pulled it out and tested it. Within the toyota specs so its fine. I also tested my old thermostat i had in the garage and its working a lot slower and opens less compared to this new one. (4 months old).
I did have a thought though.
If the radiator is really really good, the thermostat would open when the engine gets hot enough (82degrees), then as soon as the cold coolant hits the thermostat, it starts closing again, then opens once its hot again....then closes.. etc...
This is how its meant to work, but i think it might be doing it too quickely.
The thermo is sitting right next to the radiator core, the pic doesnt do it justice. Keep in mind that the bottom of the radiator is VERY COLD, so it must be cooling pretty well. The top tank gets around 105degrees and the bottom is around 30-40 degrees.
I have a blitz cap, so my boiling/overheating point is a lot higher than stock. 115-120 i was told.
The temp would go up whenever i increase rpm. If i went to 4K, then it would increase and stay there until i got boost or increased rpm again.
Well Ive reinstalled the thermostat and now im going for a drive. If it gets hot again, i'll throw the other thermos on and test that.

Went for the drive. Temp got up to 110 and stayed there. Speed up to 70, slowly, and it stayed there. Pulled over, carefully popped the cap and topped up the fluid. Temp when down to 80, then rose to 110 again whislt at idle. Drove home and of course, steam started coming out of the overflow bottle.
Symptoms are: When engine gets hot, radiator gets hot then lets off steam. The bottom of radiator doesnt get hot at all, still very cold to touch.
The causes can only be a few things.
1. Radiator
2. Thermofans
3. Thermostat
4. Water pump
Radiator is brand new, thermostat tested fine and water pump is near new.
I'll swap the thermos over now, and if that doesnt work, i'll take out the thermostat tomorrow and drive without it. Any other ideas?
