quick help regarding oil change

hey guys car noob here, normally take the car to workshop to get oil change this time started doing it myself.

long story short the big pan in front of the wheels where the oil is i left and i UNDID THE BOLT ON THE PAN IN THE CENTRE BEHIND THE FRONT WHEELS.

black oil came out and it looks exactly like engine oil. im not sure what it is and if anyone knows could they please tell me as i need to get fluid for it as there isnt any in it at the moment, only about 2 litres or so came out. i am hoping it is part of the main oil pan so i can relax.

The sump in front of thes i wheels the engine oil , the one behind the front wheels is the auto transmission sump.

Pull the auto transmission dipstick out (from the engine bay, it is a yellow plastic handle next to the intake manifold), wipe it, put it back in and then withdraw it to check it's level, if it is very low or on empty then this will help confirm that you have dropped the auto transmission fluid instead of the engine oil.

Auto transmission fluid is generally more of a red-ish colour, unless it is very old/burnt, then it has a black-ish tinge to it (so it can look a bit like engine oil).

It is not a big deal if you have in fact dropped the transmission oil, it probably was due for a change anyway by the sounds of it.

is there only 2 litres of auto trans fluid? thought was around 7 litres, surely it wouldnt be that low? it was completely black oil, the pan just behind the front wheels in centre.

if so no probs, just concerned though Confused

transmission holds 12 litres. Tranny sump should hold 3-4 litres. The rest is stored in the cooler, tranny lines and the torque convertor.

That's what I was going to say. If I were you, I would do the following.
I would buy a buy a bottle of trans fluid, a couple of litres to replace what you dropped and get your car booked in to get a transmission service. As everyone has said, if it is black, it is about time it was changed. The way it is done is basically 'bled' through the system and flushed through during the process. If you haven't done this before or nobody has shown you, I would not recommend doing it yourself.
To top it up, you may need to buy a funnel as you fill the fluid usually via the dipstick using a funnel.

easiest way to flush the tranny fluid is to disconnect the return line from the tranny cooler (radiator) and run a line from the return line nipple, hehehe, nipple! anywho... into a bucket. Start car, after 10 seconds stop car. Replace old fluid with the same amount of new fluid filled up through the dipstick pipe. Repeat process until you've flushed 12 litres or the fluid is clean.

I use penrite Synthetic ATF. Heres my comparison of the different types of synthetic fluids. Only use synthetic if you have at least 250RWKW and/or a shift kit. Use stock toyota ATF otherwise.

Density at 15 degrees
Penrite = 0.855
Transmax Z = 0.836
Penzoil Syn= 0.878
Mobile Syn = N/A

Viscosity at 100 degrees
Penrite = 7.9
Transmax Z = 7.1
Penzoil Syn= 7.23
Mobile Syn = 7.6

Visocosity Index (lower the number the more it changes from thick to thin when the temp changes)
Penrite = 209
Transmax Z = 170
Penzoil Syn= 182
Mobile Syn = 199

Pour Point Degrees (the lowest temp it can pour in certain conditions)
Penrite = -48
Transmax Z = -60
Penzoil Syn= -57
Mobile Syn = -54

Penrite wins it, and its $20 cheaper per 4 litre bottle.
Transmax seems to be more stable at low temps, but Penrite is more stable through the temp changes.

lol, well i bought 2 of everything a while back so i had a 4 litre of type 4 spare so i drained the few litres in it and replaced with new stuff, will be booking in for a transmission service within the week.

thanks for that, 99% chance saved me from a transmission replacement or rebuild down the track Very Happy

If you check the fluid level after the engine has been off for a long time, fluid from the torque converter will drain back into the pan area where the level is measured and give you a false high reading. When the engine is started, the fluid in the pan area is used to fully charge the transmission and torque converter. Also, the difference of fluid temperature will affect the measurement. The fluid volume expands when heated to operating temperature.

Great thread turned to shit.

THE TRANSMISSION HOLDS 8LITRES.

The trans pans holds 2-3, 1-2 is held above the valve body, 3-4 litres in the stall converter.

How do I know, I've done 4 services and 2 tranny installs just in the last 4 months.
